In an example of some of the stupider sides of advocacy long time autism rights advocate Joe Mele is defending Dr. Nick Dubin who was recently arrested by the FBI for being a pervert.
For those that do not yet Dr. Nick Dubin a long time autism self advocate was recently arrested by the FBI for downloading sexual imagery and videos of underage children often performing sexual acts. The acts are vividly described in the criminal complaint against Dr Dubin which is widely available – but too graphic in my judgment to be posted on this website. In a statement on an autism advocacy list serve online Joe Mele made the following statement regarding the arrest of Dr Nick Dubin.
But since underage children are not sexual objects like animals it shouldnt be a big deal if they are naked.
The above statement was made by Joe Mele after he read the full article and alligations, as well as the reports of the admission of guilt by Dr. Nick Dubin. Joe Mele also made the following statement of which I strongly disagree
This should not diminsh his work btw as well
Like hell it shouldn’t. In my opinion Dr Nick Dubin’s medical license should be immediately suspended pending investigation, and a condition of his bond should be that he is not allowed to continue advocacy work for disabled individuals or children. Dr. Dubin is not only an advocate but a recently licensed medical professional. Medical professionals should be held to a high ethical, moral and legal obligations that does extend into their personal lives.
I am fully disgusted by the Autism Rights movement who quickly jump to defend guilty individuals such as Dr. Nick Dubin, guilty by admission hacker Gary McKinnon and others. These people are demanding equal rights and opportunities for people on the Autism Spectrum but jump to the defense of someone on the spectrum who goes a muck and commits crimes. Part of having equal rights and opportunities is the responsibility of completing punishment when you commit a crime.
Dr. Nick Dubin was one of the countries leading autism self advocates after being diagnosed Autistic in 2004. He has paid special attention on how bullying affects people on the Autism Spectrum and has published several books including Asperger Syndrome and Anxiety: A Guide to Successful Stress Management
